Jim Thorpe Borough Council finalized an ordinance prohibiting parking on a section of Main Street Thursday night following a disagreement between neighbors.
By a unanimous motion, council banned parking "in the area of 420 Main St., east for 175 feet."Al Lasky, a Main Street resident, told council last month he wanted the neighbor to move "boulders" he felt were in the borough right of way, though the neighbor contended the rocks were on her property. The boulders, Lasky contended, "violated his right to park in the spot," which is actually across the street from his residence, and makes it difficult on his handicapped wife to get in and out of the car.Lasky's neighbor asked for the area to be designated no parking last year because she couldn't see when pulling out of her driveway."My wife will have to walk a mile to get to the house, and we won't be able to have visitors," Lasky said of council's decision.Councilman John McGuire said before the vote he was looking at the matter as a larger-scale safety issue."I think eventually we're going to have TO look at making all of Main Street no parking," McGuire said. "That road isn't wide and wasn't built to sustain traffic and parked cars."Borough officials have repeatedly said it's hard for two larger vehicles to pass each other without one going off the blacktop, but Lasky said school buses routinely navigate the area with ease."There are only four parked cars on the street," Lasky said. For the second straight month, Mayor Michael Sofranko questioned Lasky about whether or not he has a garage on his property.Lasky said he does, but keeps an antique car in it.With the ordinance, the neighbor told council Thursday she intends on moving the boulders.
