Schuylkill woman victim of scam

A Schuylkill County woman was the victim of a scam in which over $4,000 in gift cards were purchased using money from a closed account.

State police at Schuylkill Haven reported on the incident and declined to name the victim but released the following details of the scam. The victim received a email from a person to see if she would like to be a Walmart secret shopper. When the victim inquired about the program, she was promised between $450 and $900 per month for her to shop. The victim was then sent at “assignment” via 2 day USPS shipping. The package included a check for $2,970 with the instructions that the victim keep $450 and use the remaining money to purchase Walmart gift cards, photograph the security numbers on the cards and email the pictures of the cards to the suspect. The victim complied, purchased the gift cards in $500 increments and sent the pictures of the cards. Two days later another package arrived from the same suspect with a check from a different bank but for the same $2,970 with the same instructions. The victim purchased additional cards and sent photographs of them to the suspect. The next day the first check cashed by the victim was returned for being from a closed account. By the time the victim received the notice she had already purchased 8 sets of $500 gift cards which had been drained of the money.Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to contact Trooper Daniel P. Hillbish at 570-739-1330.
