A Tamaqua man and two children were injured in a one-vehicle crash at 5:27 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Route 209 and Old Route 209, in Schuylkill Township, about a mile west of Tamaqua.
State police at Frackville said Michael R. Bynon, 42, of Tamaqua, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Trax southbound on 209 and intended to make a left turn onto Old Route 209. Troopers said he took the turn at a high rate of speed causing the Trax to slide through the intersection and strike the guide rail at the southwest corner of the intersection.Bynon was not wearing a seat belt. The front airbag deployed but his head hit the windshield. An 8-year-old boy was in the front seat, wearing a seat belt. His airbag did not deploy and he was injured. A 4-year-old boy in the rear seat, right side who was not wearing a seat belt, nor using a booster seat, troopers said. He was also injured.All three were taken by ambulance to St. Luke’s Miners Medical Center in Coaldale. Assisting troopers were EMS units from Ryan Township and Lehighton and volunteers from the MaryD and Tuscarora fire companies.Troopers cited Bynon for driving a vehicle at a unsafe speed.
