ALLENTOWN (AP) - A Roman Catholic priest has pleaded guilty to having child pornography on his computer.
Monsignor John S. Mraz worked at St. Ann Catholic Church in Emmaus. He also served as vice principal and spiritual director at Marian High School, was charged in September with numerous crimes related to the possession of child pornography. He was pastor at St. Bertha's Church in Tuscarora. He pleaded guilty Thursday to possessing child pornography and criminal use of a communication device. He'll be sentenced in about 90 days.Defense attorney John Waldron says the child porn the priest had was "on the mild side." He acknowledges the priest viewed the images but says he never tried to "have any sexual contacts with boys."The offenses were discovered on July 25, 2016, when Mraz asked a friend and parishioner to perform maintenance updates and to upgrade his HP laptop. In doing so, the parishioner discovered files in the computer's recycle bin depicting images of nude males. The diocese relayed the information to Lehigh County District Attorney James B. Martin. Martin assigned Detective Andrew Millen, a child abuse investigator for the District Attorney, and Detective Paul Iannace, of the Digital Crime Task Force and the Officer David M. Petzold Digital Forensic Laboratory of Lehigh County, located on the campus of DeSales University, to investigate. As part of that investigation, a search warrant was executed at Mraz's residence in Emmaus. Digital devices were seized and submitted for digital forensic analysis.Investigators say digital devices seized from the priest's rectory showed internet searches for terms including "Small Boy Nudes."The Diocese of Allentown says the priest "has been removed from public ministry."
