Fugitives caught after Monroe drug sale, police chase
Two Stroudsburg residents who were wanted by authorities led Monroe County police on a chase after officers moved in on what they believe was a drug deal taking place Friday in the area of the Kohl’s store in Stroud Township.
Robert Connors, 24, and Anyssa Kravchenko, 19, were arrested after police halted them in the Penn Estates development, but not before having to utilize a stun gun.
Connors was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Michael Muth at the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono, East Stroudsburg, on charges of kidnapping, robbery, assault and other charges from the Stroud Area Regional Police Department. Officials said the charges stem from an incident that occurred in December of 2016. His bail was set at $75,000 secured.
Kravchenko was arraigned as a fugitive from justice before Magisterial District Judge Daniel Higgins, who set her bail at $25,000 secured. At the time of her apprehension, she was wanted by the Warren County, New Jersey Prosecutor’s Office for obstructing police and a government function.
Their apprehension took place as members of the Monroe County Drug Task Force set up surveillance in the parking lot of the store. The investigation included detectives from the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office and officers from the Stroud Area Regional Police Department, Monroe County Probation Department and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said they were aware Connors had been on the run from police for more than six months.
Police said when he arrived at the scene, officers were able to identify him driving the vehicle. Police said he conducted a drug transaction and quickly left the parking lot. When officers attempted to stop his vehicle and take him into custody, he fled at a high rate of speed, leading police on a pursuit and crashing through the back gate of Penn Estates, damaging it and causing it to be inoperable.
Connors then drove through Penn Estates community in circles, attempting to lose police, Connors crashed the vehicle into a wooded area then ran.
Police said Connors became trapped in a fenced-in backyard, where he was taken into custody, but not before refusing to obey police and being shot with the stun gun.
Police said Kravchenko was found in the front passenger seat of the crashed vehicle. Police said she and Connors admitted to being on a “bender” for three days, using methamphetamine and heroin.
Both Connors and Kravchenko were treated at Lehigh Valley Hospital Pocono for injuries sustained in the vehicle crash.
As a result of the transaction and chase, Connors and Kravchenko have both been charged with numerous violations, including conspiracy, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance (felony), fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer (felony), hindering apprehension (felony), flight to avoid apprehension (felony), possession of a controlled substance (misdemeanor) and possession of drug paraphernalia (misdemeanor). In addition to those charges, Connors is also charged with DUI.
