The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met May 23 with a program presented by Barb and Colleen's Unique Craft Studio. Each member had the opportunity to create a small craft project.The arrangement category for the meeting was "patriotic fresh flower." Evelyn Adams took first place, with Mary Bridygham in second and Carol Kohn in third. In the specimen category, Carol Kohn and Linda Leiby tied for first place, while Georgene Gallagher took second and Mary Bridygham took third.The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. June 27 in the social hall at Zion's Church of the Lewistown Valley. Beth Leiby of Leiby's Farm Market will present the program.Other upcoming events include a tour of Glenara Garden in Palmerton, the annual club family picnic, a private garden tour and a program presented by a Master Gardener.New members are always welcome. President Bill Morrison conducted the business session. The inspirational reading "A New Chapter" was given by the chaplain.Three new members were introduced, Barbara Hoppes, Sandy Logan and Mary Cumers; while returning members Rose Vallee, Pat Brown, Sharon Haldeman and Donald and Carol Deihm were given warm welcomes.A number of upcoming events were discussed, June 27, anniversary dinner at Capriotti's; July 18, trip to Country Cupboard and boat ride; July 25, picnic at St. Peter's Grove, Locust Valley, catered by Hess Catering.Readings were offered by Ruthann Feane and President Morrison.Jean Machamer spoke to the group about a telephone scam, suggesting that if someone calls and asks, "Can you hear me?" the best response is to just hang up.The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville. The next meeting will be held June 13.Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.Relay for LifeThe final planning session for the 2017 Relay For Life will be held at 7 p.m. June 5 at the Stadium Hill Cafe, 417 Spruce St. Light refreshments will be available.The meeting will include the hanging of banners and yard signs.The relay will be held June 23 and 24 at the Tamaqua Sports Stadium.St. John LutheranThe Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at this Sunday's 9:15 a.m. worship service in St. John's Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion and the celebration of Confirmation for five students.The worship and music committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday.Summer office hours are now in effect - 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Thursday.St. Peter's UnionThe Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church in Mantzville. The service will include the celebration of Holy Communion and Confirmation.Also on Sunday, junior choir rehearsal will be at 11 a.m.; Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.Next week's activities include: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Thursday, softball games at 6:45 and 8 p.m. at West Penn Grove, senior choir practice at 7 p.m.; Saturday, youth group camp out begins at noon.Zion LewistownPastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley.
