Raiders fall in title game

OREFIELD - No matter what happened Tuesday, the Tamaqua softball team had already made history.

With a record 20-win season and an appearance in the Schuylkill League final already under their belt, the Blue Raiders looked to notch another accomplishment with the program's first district title.Though those hopes were dashed with a 5-1 setback to Bangor in the District 11 Class 4A title game, Tamaqua head coach Jillian Barron wouldn't let the loss diminish any of the team's achievements throughout the year."It's been an amazing season," Barron said. "Coming in, there weren't too many people that expected us to make it this far, so it has been truly an amazing ride."It would have been nice to cap (it) off with the championship. But it is what it is. Sometimes your 'A' game's there, and sometimes it's not. We just fell a few hits short today. We just couldn't find it, and they did. Credit to them. They brought their bats today."Offense has rarely been an issue for the top-seeded Slaters (23-1), who have averaged just over 10-runs-per-game this season. It didn't take long for Bangor to find its rhythm against No. 3 seed Tamaqua (20-6). Hannah England smoked a two-run triple in the bottom of the second inning that gave the Slaters a 2-0 advantage, one they would never give up."It's a good feeling," Bangor coach Rich Kessler said of the team's potent offense. "It takes a little bit of the stress away. I'm confident no matter who I put in, they're gonna go in and they're gonna hit the ball."Tuesday, it was senior Ciarrah Holmqvist who did the most damage at the plate for the Slaters, going 4-for-4 with a triple, RBI and a run scored.Dani Fey (2-for-4) also drove in a run for a Bangor team that recorded 11 hits."We knew it was going to be a tough team going in. We stayed and watched a few innings of them and Wilson after we beat Becahi, and they're a power hitting team," Barron said of the Slaters' 14-2 win over Wilson in the semis. The Blue Raiders threatened on several occasions, putting runners in scoring position in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. With runners on second and third, a double play ended the second inning before England gave Bangor the lead in the bottom of the frame.Tamaqua again had runners on second and third in the top of the fourth but was unable to push across any runs.Courtney Hoffman reached on a force play in the top of the fifth and moved into scoring position by stealing second base, but was left stranded as Slaters' starting pitcher Dani Gannon again worked out of trouble. It was Holmqvist who ended the last of those opportunities in the sixth inning. After an RBI single by starting pitcher Jada Schellhammer scored Miranda Chinchar to get the Blue Raiders on the board earlier in the frame, Tamaqua appeared primed for yet another big rally when Taylar Donnon reached on a force play at second and Jane Kupchinsky followed with a single to give the Blue Raiders runners on first and second with two outs.A single off the bat of Jen Frederickson looked like it would score another run, until Holmqvist went to third base instead of throwing home, nailing Kupchinsky before the run could score to preserve the Slaters' 4-1 lead."The future looks really bright," said Barron. "We have just one senior, Cailyn Joseph … and I'm so not ready to let her go. But we are young. We have everybody back next year, except her. We have people that can fill her shoes."This was our first district championship (game) ever in Tamaqua history. And to do that with only one senior on your team, I think that's pretty remarkable. And the girls, they're upset, but we know what we have do for next year. We got the experience; now we just go for it all next year."ANOTHER ONE … Bangor's victory gave the program its second straight district title.ON A ROLL … The Slaters have not lost since a 14-4 setback to Palmerton in the fourth game of the season. Entering Tuesday, Bangor had outscored its opponents 244-65 this season.D-FENCE … Tamaqua turned a nifty double play to end the third inning. With the bases loaded, Bangor's Jaclyn Hess lined out to Blue Raiders' shortstop Courtney Hoffman, who fired back to first baseman Miranda Chinchar, who stepped on the bag to end the inning and keep the score 2-0.Tamaqua 000 001 0 - 1 7 3Bangor 020 111 x - 5 11 2Schellhammer and Zellner; D.
