Schuylkill man admits to four DUI charges

A Schuylkill County man pleaded guilty on Thursday in Carbon County court to four charges of driving under the influence and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kerry L. Freedman, 42, of Coaldale, entered the pleas before Judge Steven R. Serfass.Freedman was arrested on the DUI charges as follows: July 28, 2015, by Coaldale police along Route 209 at Fifth Street (case transferred to Carbon); Oct. 3, 2015, by Lehighton police along Coal Street; March 5, 2016, by state police at Lehighton along First Street in Lehighton; and Feb. 19 by Lehighton police along East Street. In the first three cases, a test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. In the last case, Freedman refused a blood test. The possession count occurred on Sept. 17, 2016, at the Blue Mountain Health System's Lehighton Campus.Serfass told Freedman, under state sentencing guidelines, in at least two of the DUI cases, he faces a mandatory minimum prison term of one year and as much at five years.Sentencing was deferred as Freedman is applying for placement in the state's Intermediate Punishment Program. The program is for two years and includes about seven months in prison, a period of time in an intensive inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation program, and the remaining time in a halfway house.Serfass ordered Freedman to the custody of the county sheriff to be transported to a state correctional institution to be evaluated for the program. If he is placed in the program, sentencing will occur via video from the SCI in which he is placed. However, if he is rejected for the program, he will be brought back to Carbon to be sentenced by Serfass.
