Memorial Day events

Monday

Eldred Township: Residents are invited to join in honoring its veterans at an 11 a.m. program Mondayat the Eldred Township Veterans Memorial at the Municipal Building, 490 Kunkletown Road, in Kunkletown.

Gilbert: Memorial Day services including guest speakers will be held at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert by the Army tank out front. A light lunch will follow.

Jim Thorpe: Participants will meet at the Dolon-Jones-Martino American Legion Post 304 at 7:45 a.m. Memorial Day services will be conducted at the following cemeteries: 8:15 a.m., Immaculate Conception; 8:45 a.m., Evergreen; 9:10 a.m., Saint Joseph’s; 10 a.m., Mauch Chunk.

Lansford: American Legion Post 123, services will begin at 9 a.m.at the veterans monument located at Kennedy Park. Carbon County Director of Veterans Affairs Henry Desrosiers will be guest speaker. The Lansford American Legion will place flags on veterans’ graves in the Summit Hill cemeteries before Memorial Day. Anyone whose graves might have been accidentally missed should contact the Lansford American Legion. The Lansford Legion requests all residents to display the American flag on Memorial Day and try to attend the services at Kennedy Park on Memorial Day. All veterans, Sons of the Legion, Legion Girl Scouts, Brownies, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and anyone who is presently serving in the Armed Services are invited to take part in the program at Kennedy Park. The public is especially invited to attend.

Lehighton: Veterans groups will be divided into two sections, with services/honors being held in Weissport and Lehighton simultaneously.

Group A: 8:40 a.m., Depart American Legion Post #314, 8:45 a.m., World War II/Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Monument at Lehighton Veterans Memorial Park (bypass);

8:55 a.m., Col. Weiss Monument (lower park); 9 a.m., VFW Post 256; 9:15 a.m., Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital Veterans Monument; 9:45 a.m., S.S. Peter & Paul RC Church Cemetery; 10 a.m., Vietnam/PFC Clyde Houser Monument at Lehighton Borough Annex Building.

Group B: 8:40 a.m., depart American Legion Post 314; 9 a.m., Benjamin Franklin Monument and WWI Veterans Monument in Weissport Park; 9:15 a.m., service at Union Hill Cemetery; 10 a.m., wreath tossing from Weissport Bridge to honor those veterans buried or lost at sea.

10:30 a.m.: Both veterans groups will meet in the upper Lehighton Park Amphitheater for the main service. Immediately afterward, the group will form up and proceed to American Legion Post #314 for the flag raising ceremony and conclusion of Memorial Day services/honors.

Nesquehoning:The annual Memorial Day Parade will form at 8 a.m.at the Nesquehoning Recreation Center on West Railroad Street and pull out at 8:30 a.m. The parade will stop at the VFW Monument at the intersection of routes 209 and 54 and the Lions Club Monument in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, where a prayer and volley will follow. The parade will continue to the VFW on East Center Street, where the main service will be held. All Nesquehoning residents are requested to fly their flags for the weekend.

Palmerton: Parade begins at 10 a.m. followed by services in the Palmerton Borough Park. Ray Carazo will be the main speaker. In case of inclement weather, services will be held in the S.S. Palmer Elementary School.

Slatington: The legion will host the 97th Consecutive Memorial Day Parade and Services at the Fairview Cemetery in Slatington. The parade will start after 10 a.m. from Main and Second streets and proceed to the Fairview Cemetery. Services on the cemetery will start at 10:30 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the Slatington Baptist Church at 509 Main St. at 10:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend the parade and services.

Summit Hill: Memorial services, Ludlow Park, 10 a.m.; parade, 11 a.m.

Tamaqua: Parade, 10 a.m. Service, 11 a.m., Odd Fellows Cemetery. American Legion Isganitis, Heckman, Messerschmidt Post 973 holds Salute Our Veterans, 11:30 a.m., Sky-View Memorial Park Cemetery in Hometown.
