A Lehigh Township man died after his vehicle collided with a Slatington Borough firetruck in Northampton County early Friday morning.
State police at Bethlehem said the crash occurred at 7:09 a.m. when a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse was traveling north on Cherryville Road, Allen Township, while a 2004 Gladiator Classic was heading south on Cherryville Road.
The Mitsubishi entered the left lane, passing a vehicle traveling north, and was attempting to merge back into the right lane, when while straddling the solid double yellow lines, it struck the driver's side front bumper of the Gladiator Classic with its driver side front bumper.
Slatington Fire Chief Jason Nicholas said the borough's firetruck was being driven to Horwith Trucking for state inspection when the Mitsubishi ran into it.
State police did not identify the people involved in the crash.
However, Nicholas said the victim is a 27-year-old man from Lehigh Township.
Nicholas said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
He said the person driving the borough's firetruck sustained minor injuries and was taken to Palmerton Hospital for evaluation.
Nicholas said he was called to the scene due to the borough's firetruck being involved.
He said the truck was extensively damaged, and taken to KME in Nesquehoning for repair.
"The fire department is offering its condolences to all parties involved," Nicholas said.
He said the Allen Township, East Allen Township and Northampton Borough fire companies responded to the scene, along with the Northampton Regional EMS.
