Callers pose as aging office in scam

Carbon County seniors, beware.

Scammers are spoofing the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging office's phone numbers and calling the elderly community in hopes of getting personal information.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein said on Thursday that the aging office received multiple calls this week from residents who claimed they received a call from the aging office. After four incidents, the aging office contacted their phone company to see if the originating numbers could be traced. It was determined that the calls were not made from the aging office."I want to warn people to be cautious as to when they answer the phone," he said.Nothstein said that the Federal Communications Commission has been contacted regarding the issue and is trying to trace the numbers, but since there are several in the office, it makes things a little harder.Nothstein asked residents who receive calls like this to write down the number of the call even if it comes up on caller ID as Carbon County Area Agency on Aging and call the Area Agency on Aging with that information."Hang up on the call. Call the aging office back directly," he said."Please do not give out any personal information, and if there is any doubt that it is not a legitimate call, be cautious."If anyone experiences a questionable call, they should contact the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging at 800-441-1315.
