The mayor of Lansford and an longtime council member went down in defeat on Tuesday, losing Democratic primary contests.
Mayor James Romankow was soundly defeated by Bob Silver, former businessman in the community, by a vote of 257 to 105.Silver will face Republican Ronald R. Derr Jr. in November. The latter was unopposed Tuesday and collected 83 token votes from party members.Councilwoman Rose Mary Cannon was the other casualty in the balloting, losing a five-person race for three Democratic nominations for three four-year terms that are up for grabs.The winners in that race were Silver, who garnered 276 votes, Marie Ondrus, 238; and Joseph Genits, 207.Cannon followed with 121 and Mary Soberick finished last with 89 votes.The three winning Democrats will now face two Republicans who appeared on the ballot Tuesday, including council President Martin S. Ditsky, who tallied 133 votes, and Irma J. Leibensperger, who had 173.In the tax collector's race, the incumbent Terrance P. McCall, won by a 208 to 166 vote over Donna J. Valent to win the Democratic nomination.
