Run for the Red to help Red Cross

The Run for the Red Pocono Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K Road Race will be held May 21. The event, in its 12th year, will raise money for American Red Cross Disaster Relief in the Pocono Mountains.

Both the full and half marathons start at 7 a.m. at Pocono Mountain West High School in Pocono Summit. The 5K road race steps off at 8 a.m. at Stroudsburg High School. The full marathon and 5K finish in the Stroudsburg High School stadium while the half marathon finishes at the Crescent Lodge in Paradise Valley.The Run for the Red Pocono Marathon serves as a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon in 2018. A total of $8,000 in prize money is awarded for the top three male and female finishers of the Pocono Marathon this year. Registration for the marathon and half marathon continues through Thursday at poconomarathon.org. Registration for the 5K remains open until race day.Lehigh Valley Hospital - Pocono is a proud supporter of the 2017 Run for the Red Pocono Marathon. BRC 13 will televise the finish of the marathon from the high school.The Run for the Red Pocono Marathon is a fundraiser for the American Red Cross. Across the Pocono Mountains, the Red Cross responded to about 60 emergencies in the past year, providing assistance to nearly 250 people. The Red Cross also helps save lives by installing about 700 free smoke alarms in the past year and training more than 8,000 people in lifesaving skills like CPR and First Aid. The Red Cross also collected nearly 4,000 blood donations in the past year.Marathon weekend in the Poconos coincides with Armed Forces Day on Saturday. The American Red Cross assists military members, veterans and their families in a number of ways both locally and around the world.If interested in helping with the Run for the Red Pocono Marathon, a meeting for prospective volunteers will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Stroudsburg High School auditorium on Friday.Participants can register now at poconomarathon.org.
