Lehighton defeats Palmerton to win Sixth Sense contest

Lehighton has emerged the winner in this year's Sixth Sense competition.

The team-based trivia contest started its three-day run on Tuesday morning, with Pleasant Valley, Lehighton, Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe defeating Panther Valley, Palmerton, Northern Lehigh and Northwestern Lehigh, respectively.Each round of the competition has three portions. The first part, which has no time limit, provides each team with one question from five categories - geography, science, language, math and humanities - alternating among them. Correct answers are worth two points, and also provide an opportunity for an additional two points from a bonus question. Incorrectly answering before a question is finished results in a lost point.The second part is a 10-minute event, where team captains must buzz in to answer a question. Correct answers are worth two points, with a follow-up bonus question worth one point.The third part is five minutes, with two points awarded for each correct answer, and two points subtracted for each incorrect response.Thursday night, Palmerton faced Jim Thorpe in round 13 of the three-day tournament.In a close match Palmerton secured at least a second place spot as they defeated Jim Thorpe 62-55, leaving Jim Thorpe in a hard-fought third place position. Next, undefeated Lehighton faced Palmerton in the finals for the first place spot in the Sixth Sense tournament competition.The first time Palmerton took the win with a score of 66-40.Being a double elimination tournament, the kids once again vied for the win.After back and forth scoring between both teams, Lehighton secured the win in a 62-59 win.Northwestern Lehigh was awarded fourth place trophies on Wednesday.
