Nothstein runs for Lehighton mayor

Douglas J. Nothstein is seeking the position of mayor of the Lehighton Borough. He is a 2000 graduate of Lehighton Area High School and 2002 graduate of Lackawanna College.

Nothstein attended Lackawanna College Hazleton Campus and graduated the Police Academy in May 2001, earning his Act 120 Certification.Nothstein was hired as a part-time police officer by the borough of Walnutport in 2001 at the age of 19 followed by Mahoning Township Police Department in November 2002 and Lehighton Borough Police Department in April 2003.He worked all three part-time positions until he was hired full-time by the City of Bethlehem Police Department in 2004, where he continues to serve today.Nothstein has lived his entire life in Lehighton and has witnessed firsthand how it has changed over the years. Being very family and community-oriented is one of the main reasons for his decision to run for Mayor.Nothstein earned the rank of Eagle Scout through Troop 145, which was originated by his father, Dwight L. Nothstein, former sheriff of Carbon County.Nothstein also joined the Lehighton Volunteer Fire Department at the age of 16 because he wanted to give back to his town and continue the family tradition of service to the community. Nothstein has received the Spirit of Courage award for rescuing an elderly female resident. One of his major accomplishments in life has been participating in the Police Unity Tour for the past five years. The tour is an approximately 300-mile bicycle ride over four days during National Police Week. During the tour, police officers begin their rides from different locations and converge in Washington, D.C., at the National Police Memorial. The goal of the tour is to raise awareness and funds for police officers killed in the line of duty.A few of Nothstein's goals, should he be elected to the position of mayor, are to get the borough to embrace its police department, have the borough residents understand the difficulties that the police department faces, and have them work together to build the borough into a strong, close community again.
