Blue Raiders edge Jim Thorpe
TAMAQUA - Tamaqua's baseball team got a gift on Monday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders then did what good teams do when that happens - they took advantage of it.In a matter of minutes, Tamaqua pounced on the opportunity like a cat.Garnering nary a hit, but taking advantage of extra outs, the Olympians defense served up in a two-run, fifth-inning outburst, Tamaqua posted a 4-2 Schuylkill League victory. The win not only avenged an earlier loss to Jim Thorpe, but kept the Raiders in contention for postseason play in the league.Blue Mountain (9-0) is currently leading the Division 1 race. Tamaqua (6-3, 12-3) is leading Pottsville (5-3) and North Schuylkill (4-4) in the battle for the second playoff spot out of the division."It's big, very big," said Tamaqua coach Jeff Reading. "Jim Thorpe is a tough out. (Coach) Derik Reis has done a good job with them. Their pitchers have done a good job all year keeping opposing teams off balance."Yesterday, however, the pitching spotlight belonged to Tamaqua right-hander Brady Moyer, who out-dueled the Olympians' Tyler Baird. It was Moyer's first start of the season, and he delivered a complete-game four-hitter."He had pitched here and there, but today was the first time he started, and he did a great job," Reading said.Moyer mixed his pitches extremely well, relying on a filthy curve ball. Moyer had four strikeouts, and walked three. The only time Moyer was in trouble was in a two-run, fifth-inning uprising by the Olympians - and those runs were tainted. Moyer actually took a no-hitter into that frame, before a misplayed ball in the infield and Justin Marykwas' single produced Thorpe's first threat of the game. A throwing error and a Derek Joyce RBI single produced the runs that tied the game at 2-2.Then the big sting came in the bottom half of the fifth, when Tamaqua scored twice without a hit. There were three errors and a walk, allowing the Raiders to send eight men to the plate."We've stressed to these guys all year, that when you play good teams you can't give them extra outs," said Thorpe's skipper Reis, "We did that tonight, which ultimately cost us the game. Their pitcher threw a great game, we struggled against him, but were able to claw our way back and make it interesting."Tyler threw a great game for us as well. He pitched out of some jams, but our defense let us down."WEB GEMS... Both third basemen made terrific defensive plays. Tamaqua's Isiah Kupchinsky went behind the bag along the third base line, made a super pick and then threw out Joyce, robbing him of a possible double. Ditto for Joyce on a ball hit by Breiner. Tamaqua also turned two double plays, the second in the seventh.HITTABLES... Tamaqua had six singles, one each from Brayden Knoblauch, Nate Boyle, Daylon Barron, Thad Zuber, Casey Rother and Josh Inama. Thorpe had four hits, led by Jake Burkhart's double. The Joyce brothers, Aaron and Derek, and Marykwas all singled.TOSSING IT... Baird surely deserved better in the loss. He gave up only one earned run, which came in the fourth. Moyer's complete game is rare these days with the pitch count a now in place. Moyer threw 95 pitches, 59 for strikes.Jim Thorpe 000 020 0 - 2 4 4Tamaqua 100 120 X - 4 6 2Baird, Marykwas (6) and A.
