Dealership donates to Carbon animal shelter
The sales and management staff at Lehighton Kia have donated $1,550 to the county animal shelter, Carbon County Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard announced Thursday.
"It's a huge donation to our animal shelter, and we thank them," he said.Also, Gerhard said, a certified dog trainer will be on hand at the shelter on May 20 to offer dog training classes free of charge to shelter staff and to the public.Gerhard also reminded residents that May 6 is Community Safety Day in the county.The event will held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mauch Chunk Lake Park.Gerhard's remarks were absorbed by students from Carbon Career & Technical Institute, Jim Thorpe High School, Marian Catholic High School, and Weatherly Area High School.The students and teachers attended the public commissioners meeting as part of Government Day.In other matters, the county will pay an additional $2,000 for a technical report being done by RGA Inc., of Cranberry, New Jersey.The additional money brings the cost to $10,682.The extra cost is because RGA, which is completing an archaeological study at the site of the planned Fire & Emergency Services Training Facility in Nesquehoning, found two small, prehistoric Native American sites.RGA will need to prepare a full technical report to be submitted to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Commissioner's also agreed to extend the firm's contract for the work to May 12 so it can do the report.In other business, commissioners authorized the publication of notices to bid on two Community Development Block Grant projects.They are street improvements Rex Road bridge reconstruction in Mahoning Township, using CDBG funds from 2014 and 2015.A pre-bid meeting will be held at 10 a.m. May 17.The other project involves neighborhood facilities/Weatherly Area Community Library, kitchen and hallway renovations using CDBG funds from 2013.A pre-bid meeting will be held at 10 a.m. May 22.Also on Thursday, commissioners approved the lease of two 15-passenger vans from Jim Thorpe Auto rentals for $6,750.The vans will be used between May 22 and Aug. 11 to transport Liquid Fuels Summer Program employees. The cost increased by $150 over last year.
