Woman going to court in fatal turnpike crash

A Philadelphia-area woman waived a preliminary hearing on charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence Friday.

Lasheira Michelle Johnson, 28, of Chester, is charged in connection with a fatal crash in July 2015 on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-476).A 3-year-old boy died and five other people were injured after being ejected from the vehicle in the crash.Police said that a blood test revealed that Johnson had marijuana and cocaine in her system at the time of the crash.Johnson, who was in court on Friday to waive her preliminary hearing, is currently free on $100,000 unsecured bail.A pretrial conference in the case is scheduled for next month.Johnson declined comment after the hearing. Her attorney said that the incident has been a tragedy for her and her family.The crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. on July 20, 2015. Police said Johnson was driving a Mercury SUV northbound on I-476, just before the Mahoning Valley Interchange, when she lost control of the vehicle.The SUV overturned, ejecting Johnson, the victim, and four other passengers. The child, age 3, was pronounced dead at the scene.One of the passengers in the vehicle told police that Johnson had been behind the wheel at the time of the crash.Johnson was hospitalized. A blood test revealed evidence of marijuana and cocaine in her system.Johnson later told police that she had used marijuana and cocaine on July 18 and 19, but not on the day of the fatal crash.She is facing felony charges of homicide by vehicle, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter. She also faces two counts of endangering the welfare of children. The case is being prosecuted by District Attorney Jean A. Engler.
