Surprise visit

hen Delano resident James Shaup sat down to celebrate his 80th birthday with family on Saturday, he had no idea that there would be a special guest joining him.

His grandson, stationed for more than a year on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, timed his leave so that he could arrive in Schuylkill County for the occasion.Petty Officer 3rd Class Jordan Black, 21, hasn't been home since Christmas 2015. So when he strode through the back door of DiMaggio's La Dolce Casa in Tamaqua on Saturday, it put tears in his grandfather's eyes."I can't believe this. I'm in shock. I really am," Shaup said.Black has continued a military tradition in the family. Shaup served, as well as Jordan's mother and cousin.Black's ship, the USS Ronald Reagan, is preparing to ship out in May, meaning this could be his last leave for more than a year. He was expected to visit sometime next month, but moved up the trip and surprised his grandfather, with help from his mom, Pam, and sister Chelsea. They picked him up from the airport at midnight Friday. Then Saturday morning, they waited until Shaup went on the computer so that Jordan could sneak out of the house to go visit other relatives."He was hiding all morning," Pam Shaup said. "I was like a nervous wreck."Black said that he plans to spend his two weeks at home relaxing, doing some coyote hunting, and enjoying a few cartons of Guers' tea in the process. But helping make his grandfather's birthday was special."That's the role model right there," he said. From Shaup's perspective, the respect is mutual."Oh, he makes me proud. Very much so," Shaup said.
