Man caught with gun at school gets state prison

In the wee hours of June 26, Tamaqua police caught Matthew R. Bachman, armed with a handgun and a pocket knife and carrying drugs, lurking around the local elementary school.

On Friday, Schuylkill County Judge Jacqueline L. Russell sentenced him to one to two years in state prison followed by three years on probation.Bachman on Feb. 15 pleaded guilty to a felony charge of carrying a firearm without a license, and to misdemeanor charges of possessing a weapon on school property, giving false identification to law enforcement, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance.Additional charges of hindering apprehension, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and defiant trespass were dropped.Bachman also pleaded guilty in a separate case to possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.According to court documents, police saw Bachman outside the school at 3:23 a.m. June 26, 2016. He tried to flee, and police used a Taser to stop him.When police searched Bachman, they found he was carrying a handgun without a permit, and a pocket knife.Bachman also had methamphetamine and hydrocodone, and paraphernalia including small plastic bags, a cut straw, and a scale.In the separate case, he had the same types of drugs and paraphernalia on Aug. 9, 2016.
