Be creative in absence of block grants

Carbon County should be adopting a proactive, creative approach in the face of Trump administration policies that threaten the local economy by eliminating block grants, as described in your recent news story.

Think of all the assets Carbon County has in the campaign to make America great again, Trump style. For example, we could be promoting Beaver Meadows as the venue for Mr. Trump's Miss Universe pageants and other babe blowouts.Kidder Township could obviously make a great headquarters for the White House communications team, with its departments of fake news and alternative facts. What better place than the aptly named Summit Hill to have a top-level meeting with the Russians (hosted, of course, by the county Board of Elections). We have to remember that the very name "Carbon" is gold in the new Trump economy where coal is king once more. Following the lead of the federal Department of Education, we could save millions by shutting down our public school system to allow all our children free access to coal-mining jobs, as was the case a century ago when America was great.Schools only turn young people into liberal snowflakes anyway. As an incentive, those children who survive the mines with lungs and limbs intact could be given a casino chip that would give the boys a 1 percent discount on Trump University tuition and give the girls an equivalent discount on Ivanka's made-in-China accessories. The possibilities are endless. The Lehighton high-rise for the elderly could be turned into a Trump Tower hotel once its residents have been starved out by cuts to Meals on Wheels. The old jail in Jim Thorpe could house Guantanamo detainees and other political prisoners, with Hillary as a live-in matron. We could even ask Mexico to annex Carbon County - only fair because we did it to them last time. This would attract lots of money, lots of it, when the Trump administration orders a wall to be built around the county. And, since we would technically be Mexican citizens, the administration would not be bound by fair labor laws. Mr. Trump could pay the same substandard wages to us that he pays to the other undocumented workers hired over the years for his other projects. So you see, it's not all gloom and doom. With a little creativity and good old American know-nothingism, Carbon County can do its part in making America great again.Edward MoranJim Thorpe
