Two charged with series of cigarette, cash thefts

A case against two people involving cigarette and cash burglaries throughout several counties will go forward, following a preliminary hearing by Judge Colleen Mancuso.

Clara Ann Donovan and Juan Salvador Reyes Jr., who share a rental at 124 Market St., Bangor, were charged in relation to four robberies conducted between June and October of 2016, with over $50,000 in cash nearly $19,000 in cigarette cartons stolen in total. The first incident occurred between June 27 and 28 at the Tobacco Shop in Wind Gap, where the suspect or suspects - three sets of shoe prints on the roof make the number involved unclear- entered the store through a self-made hole, proceeded to steal cash and 60 cartons of cigarettes. Detective Eric Donaldson of the Slate Belt Regional Police Department researched the shoe prints, matching one to the Nike brand.BrodheadsvilleOn July 25, Fern Ridge barracks State Trooper Craig T. Dadurka investigated a forced entry burglary and theft at the Tobacco Outlet in Pleasant Valley Plaza in Brodheadsville. Video surveillance captured a suspect prying open cash registers, an ATM, and video game machines, and stealing several brands of cigarette cartons over the course of about an hour.On Sept. 10, the same suspect was caught on camera breaking into the Tobacco Shop outlet on Route 611 in Scotrun just after midnight. The suspect crawled about 100 feet through the strip mall's attic before knocking a hole through the drop ceiling and entering a storage area, where he pried open two cash registers and an ATM, stealing all of the cash within. Video from this incident captured images of the suspect's black Nike sneakers, along with a clip of the suspect receiving a call on a smart phone that lasted between 16 to 25 seconds.Pocono Township Police Department Detective James Wagner ended up leading the multi-jurisdictional investigation after this burglary. After briefings from other investigators, Wagner determined the modus operandi: roof top forced entry by self-created holes or use of roof vents, self-created holes through sheet rock or drop ceilings to enter the interior of the building, a suspect staying low to the ground and crawling to avoid motion censors, pried-open cash registers, ATMs, and video games, and theft of cash, coins, and large quantities of cigarette cartons. On Oct. 15, just after 1 a.m., the suspect entered a roof vent, crawled through the attic, and broke through ceiling tiles at Kim's Tobacco Shop in Brodheadsville. The suspect set off an alarm at 1:48 a.m., fleeing the scene with cash and cigarette cartons. Video surveillance caught images of the suspect's Nike sneakers, as well as their cellphone and a crowbar used in the previous burglary.Cellphone recordsWagner focused on the Scotrun incident, requesting data from the four major cellphone service providers to match with the time and place of the call the suspect took while in the Tobacco Shop. After obtaining court orders for more information relating to the phone numbers, searches ended up connecting the phones to Reyes and Donovan. After a roof top burglary at a bank in Washington Township, Detective Thomas Beiser connected Reyes's and Donovan's phones to the time and location of the incident. After interviewing Reyes and connecting his sneaker pattern with one of those found at the Scotrun burglary, police obtained search warrants for his apartment and arrest warrants for Reyes and Donovan. Donovan's phone had text messages referencing the stolen cigarettes, as well as a $500 deposit made after the Wind Gap burglary.Donaldson interviewed the owner of a phone number that Donovan had texted in regard to the cigarettes, with the owner confirming that she did know the suspects, and had purchased and received cigarettes from them.Donovan is facing 13 felony charges related to the burglary, theft, and receiving stolen property. Reyes is charged with 24 felonies and 4 misdemeanor counts, including burglary, theft, receiving stolen property, and criminal mischief.Bail for both suspects is set at $100,000 each. Neither was able to post bail.
