An area TV station and a fire safety company has teamed up to get smoke detectors into the hands of the residents who need them.

ABC Television affiliate station WNEP and Kidde United Technologies are again participating in Operation Save a Life, which is a public service campaign that is designed to educate consumers on the dangers of fire and the need for working smoke detectors in the hopes of cutting down on fire fatalities. Other Pennsylvania stations participating include 6ABC in Philadelphia and ABC27 in Harrisburg.Carbon County recently received 480 smoke detectors through the campaign to distribute.Mark Nalesnik, Carbon County Emergency Management Agency director, said that he is currently distributing the smoke detectors to the 20 fire districts in the county.Each fire district will receive 24 smoke detectors, which they can give out to area residents through various campaigns or at a fire call if there isn't a working smoke detector."It's an opportunity to get some fire protection out there for the citizens who otherwise might not have access to them," Nalesnik said.Operation Save a Life has been in existence for more than 15 years, and Kidde has donated more than 1.3 million smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to fire departments through partnerships with ABC affiliate stations around the country.The company recommends making sure homeowners replace their smoke detectors every 10 years.
