Two killed in Schuylkill crash

(AP) ORWIGSBURG - Two people died Saturday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash on Route 61 in North Manheim Township, according to state police at Schuylkill Haven.

Mark Naftzinger, 57, of New Ringgold, and a 7-year-old boy from Pottsville, who police did not identify, were killed in the crash, according to Trooper Jordan Seiler, the investigating officer.

Police said the crash also resulted in multiple injuries and is still under investigation. It occurred at 12:30 p.m. at Route 61 and Market Street.

Naftzinger was the operator of a 2013 Subaru and Lauren Bechtel, 31, of Pottsville, was the driver of a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu, police said. The boy was a passenger in Bechtel's car and Margaret Bair, 83, of Orwigsburg, and Robin Naftzinger, 59, of New Ringgold were passengers in Naftzinger's vehicle, according to police.

Police did not say where the injured were transported for treatment or how many people were hurt.

Orwigsburg Fire Departm ent and Schuylkill EMS assisted on the scene.

Traffic was diverted off Route 61 during the rescue and as police conducted their investigation. Southbound traffic was detoured at the Sheetz/McDonald's intersection. Most motorists used Second Mountain Road to get into Orwigsburg and connect with Route 443.
