Due to snow squalls moving through the area, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is alerting drivers that Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County is closed due to vehicular crashes.

Interstate 81 is closed both north and southbound between Exit 131 (PA 54) and Exit 138 (PA 309).

Motorists are advised to use the posted detour that utilizes PA 54 and PA 309.

Photos of the Schuylkill County pileup posted on social media show numerous cars and tractor trailers off the highway and on top of one another, according to the Associated Press.

It's unclear whether there are any injuries.

Although PennDOT crews have been treating roadways, the department's primary goal is to keep roads passable, not completely free of ice and snow. PennDOT will continue to treat roadways until precipitation stops and roads are clear.
