PennDOT moving ahead with Route 93 truck ban

PennDOT is going ahead with plans to ban large tractor-trailers from Route 93 between Nesquehoning and Hazleton.

However, there are stakeholders who would like to see the agency at least allow trucks to go up the hill.

State Rep. Tarah Toohill hosted a meeting with PennDOT officials on Tuesday to share concerns about the truck ban.

The ban will apply only to 102-inch wide tractor trailers, with a minimum length of 28 feet. Trucks making local deliveries in the restricted area would be exempt.

Trucks traveling between Hazleton and Nesquehoning will now have to take Route 309 south to Hometown, and follow Route 54 east to its intersection with Route 209. Trucks traveling northbound will take Route 54 west to 309 north.

PennDOT engineer Dennis Toomey said that the decision to ban trucks on 93 came after a traffic study that involved interviewing truckers stopped at the top of Route 93.

The study showed that approximately 50 trucks per day will have to detour as a result of the ban.

Signs will be erected in the next few weeks, Toomey said.
