Coaldale council voices trash concerns

Scrap metal hunters in Coaldale borough are causing frustration among residents by leaving trash to blow around the borough.

And while the scrappers are legally allowed to pick through trash that is put out to the curb, they can be cited for scattering rubbish.Borough council members expressed frustration after winds blew around loose trash on a recent trash collection day in the borough.Trash is collected Monday morning in the borough.Councilman Francis Hutta said it happened to him after people collecting metal in the borough rummaged through his can."People stack their garbage, but with the wind, and there's these idiots riding around collecting metal, ripping it apart. The stuff is blowing all over the streets," he said.Claire Remington said she talked to a resident who had glass scattered in front of their house by someone picking their trash."We need to find something our department can really enforce," Remington said.Council President Angela Krapf pointed out that trash taken out to the curb in Coaldale is technically public property.She said she's heard of people in the area stealing whole bags of trash.Council's attorney, Robert Yurchak, said that the incidents are enough to cite the person for scattering rubbish."If you spread it all around, it's definitely spreading rubbish," Yurchak said."They can be cited, that's for sure."
