Two water line breaks were discovered in Tamaqua this morning, with one of them forcing the closure of the Tamaqua Area Elementary School.
The breaks were found before 7 a.m. today — one at the north end of Lombard Street, which is the access road for the elementary school; the other on Pleasant Row.Borough officials notified Tamaqua Area School District Superintendent Raymond Kinder of the break soon after it was discovered, letting him know the street was closed to all traffic. That left Yetten Circle as the only access to the school, a small street unable to handle bus traffic. The decision to close the school was made in the interest of student and staff safety.Borough officials were unsure of how long it would take to repair the breaks.
Tamaqua Area Water Authority employees deal with a water main break on Lombard Street Thursday morning. The location of the break meant bus traffic would be unable to reach the Tamaqua Area Elementary School, forcing school district officials to cancel classes for the day. KATHY KUNKEL/TIMES NEWS
