A fast-moving fire in Summit Hill sent one person to an area hospital Tuesday afternoon.
Firefighters were called to a home on West Hazard Street around 12:30 p.m. for a dwelling fire. When they arrived, fire had fully engulfed the rear of the home and smoke could reportedly be seen from the Nesquehoning area.An elderly resident was transported to an area hospital after the blaze. Officials said that she got out of the home on her own.Due to the quick work of five area fire companies, there was little damage to the front exterior of the home, according to Diligence Fire Co. No. 1 chief Shawn Hoban."We had great cooperation with all the neighboring towns, I think that's why half the building is still standing. Lansford, Nesquehoning, Coaldale and Tamaqua all did an exceptional job," Hoban said.Witnesses said they came to the scene after seeing thick black smoke, and reported shingles popping off of the home during the fire. Hoban said that the flying shingles were probably caused by a combination of the intense blaze and swirling winds in the area at the time. There were concerns that the wind would cause the fire to spread to adjacent homes, but firefighters quickly contained the blaze.Hoban said the fire appears to have originated in the rear kitchen area, but there is still investigation to be done."We can't determine until we get in there and look around, and talk to the occupant," he said. The home sustained heavy damage to the rear, but determining whether it's a total loss will be left to the insurance company, Hoban said.
