Devils upset Marian

Marian ran out of miracles before it even put its sneakers on the floor Thursday evening.

Shenandoah Valley on the other hand found a way to fend off the Fillies and post a 34-27 Schuylkill League upset victory. The loss stunned Marian and just about ended its hopes of retaining the Division 3 title. Mahanoy Area now holds a two-game edge over the Fillies with just two games to play. The Fillies (12-6, 8-3) received a tough blow earlier this week during a win over Weatherly. The close decision was costly as Marian lost starters Gianna Agosti and and Emily Shaud to injuries in the game.To add to its woes, the Fillies' Brenna Karnish went down with an injury late in the contest. With Marian trailing 29-23 with 1:43 to play. Karnish was fouled and dropped to the floor as she tried knifing through the Lady Devils' defense. Karnish could never make her way to take the free throws, instead freshman Isabella Schwabe had to come off the bench, sinking the back-end of two shots."We did what we could," said Marian coach Paul Brutto. "We were right there. Had we hits some layups at crucial times it would have been a big difference."Instead the Devils (13-7, 6-5) were coming up big. Freshman Victoria Donovan was the key factor for Shenandoah Valley in the final quarter. After Karnish tied the game 21-21, Donovan and Carly Teaschenko hit buckets, the latter connecting for a huge triple putting her team up 26-21 with 4:21 to play."Injuries forced them into playing the big lineup," said Devils' coach Chris Conroy. "We just had to fight and scrap and try to rebound the best we could."I know they got a quite a few offensive rebounds, but Vickie Donovan went in and played their center and she just fought and kept after it."Not only was the freshman tossed into the fire, she responded with a huge corner triple for a 29-22 lead, then later helped sealed the victory completing a three-point play the old fashion way with a deuce and a foul shot for a 32-27 advantage with 40 seconds remaining."We made that nice run to start the third quarter, but then they came right back," said Brutto. "They played very well late in the third quarter and carried it over in the fourth."HURTING ... Four players from Marian's opening night starting line-up have now suffered injuries. The Fillies lost center Madison Stoyer for the season with an ACL injury. Agosti and Shaud thyen went down on Monday before Karnish got banged up last night.TOP SCORERS ...
