A Jim Thorpe man was sentenced to a minimum of one year in jail after previously pleading guilty to two counts of driving under the influence.

He was one of nine defendants who had previously pleaded to DUI and related counts and were sentenced Friday by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.Controlled substancesJeffrey James Malloy, 30, was sentenced to serve one to five years in prison on the two counts with the terms running concurrently. He must also pay fines totaling $8,000. On an endangering the welfare of a child charge he was sentenced to serve six to 18 months in prison, concurrent with the DUI charges.Malloy was arrested on May 8, 2015, along Interchange Road (Route 209) by Franklin Township police. Police responded to the area for a report of a vehicle off the road with damages. Police found Malloy's vehicle with a flat tire. Police also said Malloy was under the influence and they found two girls, then ages 2 and 4, in the vehicle. Taken for a test, the result showed the presence of a controlled substance.The second arrest occurred on Feb. 21, 2015, along Stony Creek Road in Penn Forest Township by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.Malloy admitted being addicted to opiates at the time of both DUIs. He said since his arrest he entered an inpatient rehabilitation program and successfully completed it. Malloy said the treatment he received "helped me a lot." He added, "It taught me how to live again."Nanovic also imposed a total license suspension of 36 months, and Malloy must render 100 hours of community service. He was given credit for time spent in the rehab and a halfway house.He will begin serving the remainder of his sentence at 9 a.m. Feb. 13.Gets yearMichael Paul Rehrig,33, of Palmerton, was sentenced to serve one to five years in prison for DUI and 90 days on a driving under suspension-DUI related with the terms running concurrently.He was arrested on Nov. 15, 2015, along Forest Inn Road in Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.He was also ordered to pay a fine of $2,500 and one-year license suspension.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. Jan. 31. However, he has been notified he will be accepted into the Salvation Army's long-term inpatient program and will be furloughed from the prison to enter it.Fifth convictionMichael Keith Strohl,39, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve nine months to five years in prison for his fifth drunken driving conviction.He was arrested on Jan. 9, 2016, by state police at Lehighton along Route 248 in Franklin Township. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, and his license was suspended for 18 months.He blamed his drug use on a former girlfriend and asked the court for a sentence in the mitigated range. Nanovic denied the request stating, "I see no reason go to the mitigated range."On a driving under suspension charge he was fined $200.He will begin the jail term at 6 p.m. Jan. 30 and was granted work-release privileges as long as he can produce proof of employment.Other casesSteven Russell Montgomery II,27, of Lansford, was sentenced in two DUI cases. In the first case he was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000 and one-year license suspension. On the second DUI he was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail followed by 50 months in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program with the first 60 days on electronic monitoring, pay a fine of $1,500 and another year license suspension. The jail terms run concurrent.He was arrested on the first count on May 11, 2014, along Route 209 at Route 248 in Franklin Township by state police at Lehighton. The second arrest occurred on Nov. 27, 2015, along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township by state police at Fern Ridge. In both cases tests revealed the presence of a controlled substance.He will begin the jail term at 6 p.m. Feb. 17 and serve three days, then on consecutive weekends of two days at a time.Wayne Paul Heffelfinger,51, of Coaldale, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in prison, pay a fine of $1,000 and his license was suspended for a year.He was arrested on April 23, 2016, along Route 209 in Lehighton by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. On a possession of drug paraphernalia charge he was placed on probation for six months, consecutive to the DUI charge. He will begin the jail term at noon on Feb. 3.James Allen Rhodes,43, of Stroudsburg, was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail. He was arrested on May 25, 2016, along Pohopoco Drive in Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,000, his license was suspended for a year and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use. On a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia he was placed on probation for six months, consecutive to the DUI charge.He began the jail term immediately.Mark David Felker,23, of Bath, was sentenced to serve 48 hours to six months in prison. He was arrested on April 24, 2014, by state police at Lehighton along Golf Road in Lower Towamensing Township. A test revealed a 0.21 BAC. Felker was previously placed in the Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program but was revoked for violating conditions.He was also ordered to pay a fine of $500 and his license was suspended for a year. He was given credit for two days already spent in jail on the charge and paroled.Robert L. Matlock,30, of Blakeslee, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000 and a one-year license suspension.He was arrested on May 24, 2014, along Route 209 in Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.On a driving under suspension charge he was fined $200.He will begin the jail term at 2 p.m. Feb. 3.Jeremy Ryan Smith,39, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000 and a one-year license suspension.He was arrested on Nov. 21, 2015, by state police at Lehighton along Route 248 in Franklin Township. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. Feb. 27.Each defendant must also pay court costs of around $1,000, a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation for parole and follow all recommendations of their drug and alcohol evaluation.
