Panther Valley handles Weatherly

Panther Valley put together one of its most complete games of the season.

The result was a 70-49 Schuylkill League boys basketball victory over Weatherly. The Panthers (7-11, 3-6) looked nothing like the team that struggled through a six-game losing streak earlier this month. The victory over the Wreckers was their third in the last six games as PV appears to be improving as the season winds down.Friday night, three players hit double digits. Rene Figueroa led the way with 22 points in his best outing on the season. Senior Anthony Micholik dipped into the well for 16 points and Tristen Blasko notched 11 points and seven rebounds. As much as that trio were the headliners, there were plenty of other contributors. Josue Rodriguez chipped in eight points, and Blake White who came off the bench to spur a second-half outburst that sprung the Panthers from a tight affair into an easy win."We've had our issues, no doubt," said veteran Panther coach Pat Crampsie about the lack of wins. "But we did a lot of good things tonight. Blake White comes off the bench and gives us good solid minutes in that second half. Micholik is playing his final year like he doesn't want it to end, and Figueroa did a great job penetrating, scoring and was also terrific defensively."Meanwhile, Jonathan Arthur had a big night for Weatherly. The 5-11 junior forward had a knack for tossing up the threeball, hitting five in a 19-point career-high outing.Arthur's play wasn't enough, however, as the Wreckers fell victim to a familiar problemTwenty-five times the Wreckers played fiddlesticks unable to hold onto the ball, and at times it was more like a Sloppy Joe Friday Night menu fare as opposed to fine dining."Their press hurt us. It's been the story of our season," said first-year Weatherly coach Corey Gerhart. "We have far too many turnovers."On the plus side, Arthur had a great night shooting. Had we had a little more support behind him and cut down on the mistakes, who knows?"Panther Valley broke free from a 10-10 tie with 2:32 to play in the first quarter, zipping in front 18-12 thanks to White, Figueroa and a threeball by Brandon Stilitino to jump out in front for good. The Wreckers did close the gap 25-20 on Arthur's second triple with 5:14 showing in the second period, before the Panthers stuck a pin in the balloon racing off with a 36-24 halftime lead thanks to Figueroa and Rodriguez with five points apieceduring the run.Yet things were far from settled in Weatherly's eyes at the onset of the third quarter as a 7-2 run behind Arthur's triple, and Steph Yurchak recycling a missed shot made it 38-31. The issue was still in the balance midway through the quarter, when the Wreckers cranked out a 6-0 flurry to make it 43-37.Undaunted, Panther Valley quickly regrouped to take a 49-40 lead at the end of the third period and then used a 15-4 spurt to button-down the victory.WINDEXING ... Panther Valley had a huge rebounding night with 58. Micholik had 10 to lead the way, Morgans came off the bench to collar eight. Weatherly picked off 36 with Austin Koslop and Yurchak getting 10 apiece.SWEPT AWAY ... The Panthers also won the JV game 53-43.
