Schenk, Pottsville too much for Olympians

POTTSVILLE - Pottsville's Kyra Schenk is hard to miss.

The Crimson Tide's standout 6-0 center puts a lot of pressure on opposing basketball teams.Thursday night at Martz Hall, the senior recorded a double-double, drilling home 19 points and picking off 15 rebounds to help her team post a convincing 58-41 Schuylkill League victory. In the process, Schenk looked every bit the best big girl in a league loaded with talented post players."She's a heck of player that I got to see all last summer," Jim Thorpe coach Rob Kovac said, referring to AAU basketball. "I watched her do that against quality opponents all summer. We just don't have the size to match up."If Schenk wasn't shooting, she was dishing. That afforded Sadie Comfort and Lexi Platchko the opportunity to drain 16 points and 14 points respectively. That type of balance is the reason why this team is undefeated at 8-0 in Division I play and 12-3 on the season."I didn't think we played badly, but with their other kids getting involved (offensively) that puts a lot of pressure on a lot of teams, not just us," Kovac said.Where the Tide excels is at the defensive end. Pottsville's coach Curt Ziegmont makes that a staple of teams he has coached, past and present. "We did all right most of the night. I thought we did a good job of keeping (Kayley) Kovac under wraps."Kovac would lead the Olympians equaling Schenk's output with 19 of her own. Natalia Richard just missed a double digit night scoring nine.Like a bad cold, Thorpe couldn't shake free of the Tide defense in the middle quarters.Late in the opening quarter Thorpe tied it on a Kovac pull up jumper in the paint at 8-8 and then seized what would be a short-lived 11-10 lead after the quarter thanks to Kayley's sister Payton Kovac as she buried three foul shots."We just tightened things up after that first quarter," explained Ziegmont. "We were able to get more help and I thought we rebounded very well in the second and third quarters."Holding a lead to start the second quarter, the Olympians started to fade when Platchko hit a pair of baskets that were sandwiched in between a pair of Comfort foul tosses.Even after Thorpe's Alexys Naranjo cut the lead to four points with a bucket, one could sense the Tide was about to rise. The home club scored 10 of the games next 12 points and secured a 30-16 lead just before the break on a pair of Schenk foul tosses.Pottsville spread the margin to a commanding 46-29 after three quarters and cruised the rest of the way."We played a pretty good first quarter, but Kayley getting her second foul early in the second quarter really hurts us," said coach Kovac. "Getting those fouls takes away her aggressiveness and when that happens it takes away shots for other kids."FALLING BEHIND... Jim Thorpe fell to 3-5 in the division and 7-7 on the season.FOUL TROUBLE ...Kayley Kovac eventually fouled out of the game in the fourth quarter.JIM THORPEK. Kovac 7-5-9-19, Richards 4-0-1-9, P.
