Northwestern cruises
Chris Deutsch has a young Northwestern girls basketball team and he knows he'll have to be patient at times.
On Thursday night against Palmerton, the Tigers' coach had a chance to let the youth shine during a convincing 54-28 Colonial League win against the Bombers."We rotated a lot more than usual tonight," Deutsch said. "We got a lot of girls in and out, which I thought was a positive. I know we're young, but sometimes I have to realize that I only have one senior (Paige Stitzel) in the program."Sometimes I have to be a little more patient. Sometimes though that isn't one of my strengths."The Bombers' inexperience showed in the beginning of the game as Northwestern jumped out to a 15-0 run to kick things off. Despite shooting just 6-of-16 from the floor in the quarter, the Tigers led 19-6 after the initial period. It didn't get any better in the second quarter for the Bombers, as Northwestern built a commanding 30-10 lead."We don't want to catch ourselves watching the scoreboard," said Palmerton coach Ralph Andrews. "That's not going to be a true indication of how we're playing. I think tonight was an indication of that. We played much better than we did against Bangor, but we lost by close to the same amount of points."Defensively, we're trying to limit them to one shot and make it a tough shot for them and focus on getting the rebound. Offensively, the idea of one possession at a time is we will try to work the ball in and get the best look we can."Palmerton did have a little more success doing those things in the second half, as the Tigers only outscored them 24-20 over the final 16 minutes of play. The Tigers' Leighanna Lister finished with a double-double to lead her team. Lister had a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds. Sage Christopher also hit double digits with 10 points. For the Bombers, it was Linnaea Leister leading the way with 12 points. Not only did Deutsch get a chance to give his young players plenty of valuable minutes in the fourth quarter, he got the chance to see what the future holds for the Bombers as some of their underclassmen gained varsity experience as well."People have to be patient in Palmerton," Deutsch said. "It's not going to happen overnight. If you give him (Andrews) a chance, he's going to work with this program and he's going to get it back to where it was in the past."Credit to him and his kids. When you're young and things aren't going your way, kids sometimes pack it in, but Palmerton didn't."They played hard in the second half. He has them going in the right direction."STREAK CONTINUES ...Northwestern (7-3 overall; 5-1 CL) has pushed its season win streak to four games with the win. Meanwhile, it also extends the Tigers' win streak over the Bombers (2-8; 1-5) to three games after they won both games a year ago.CLEARED BENCHES ...All 12 points scored by the Tigers in the fourth quarter were scored by the bench.
