Ice shuts down 209 in Franklin

Roads quickly turned into a sheet of ice just before daybreak this morning, caused by freezing rain that moved through the area early.

The slick conditions led to a two-car crash along Route 209 in Franklin Township in the area of LaRose's Skating Rink.Fire Chief Lynn Diehl said the incident occurred at 7:15 a.m.Diehl said both people involved in the crash were taken to the hospital, with one sustaining a moderate injury.Lehighton State Police said vehicles were getting disabled due to sliding off the road.Just before 7 a.m., one car slid off the road and slammed into a tree at the intersection with Stagecoach Road.Fire police first shut down Route 209 at Elm Street and detoured traffic up the hill. A Turkey Hill truck got stuck about halfway up the hill, until a township truck came with salt and cinders.One driver coming down the hill commented that the road was dangerous."It's a good way to get someone killed," he said.The roadblock was moved down to Hemlock Street, while drivers waited for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation truck to clear the way.Traffic started moving just after 8 a.m.Marta Gouger contributed to this report.
