About Auctioneers

Auctioneers must be licensed in Pennsylvania.

To become licensed, a person must graduate from an approved school of auctioneering (Harrisburg Area Community College, Reading Area Community College or Clarion University), or apprentice for two years with 30 sales.The person must also achieve a passing score on the Pennsylvania Auctioneer Examination, and the examination fee is $200. The State Board of Auctioneer Examiners is in Harrisburg.In Pennsylvania, 4,939 people hold auctioneer licenses, but of those only 2,012 are actively licensed.In addition, 3,309 people have been issued apprentice licenses, with 297 of those actively licensed.There are 211 licensed auction companies and 149 active auction houses licensed in the state.Pennsylvania currently has reciprocal agreements with the following 13 states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.To be eligible for licensure by reciprocity, he/she must be a nonresident of PA and hold a current auctioneer license by the state of his residence from the list above.
