With their efforts to bring the Moving Wall to Palmerton, in addition to installing the new flagpole at the town’s entrance, it was an eventful year for the local United Veterans Organization.
The Moving Wall was a highlight of the Palmerton borough park from July 21 to 25, thanks to the efforts of Vietnam veteran Steve Vlossak, among other UVO members.“I was there every day for that,” Vlossak said. “All of our community was there, from the planning until the end.”The 252-foot-long and 5-foot-tall moving wall displayed the names of the more than 58,000 people who died during the Vietnam War.Ceremonies were held each evening, including one with local families whose solders were listed on the wall. The veterans held several fundraisers and many people contributed to the cause. The UVO was also instrumental in the effort to install a new flagpole at the entrance to Palmerton off Route 248.On Nov. 6, the UVO hosted a ceremony recognizing Palmerton native and Sgt. Maj. of the U.S. Army Daniel Dailey.Dailey presented the veterans with a 20-foot-by-38-foot American flag that he brought back from his time in Iraq as “a tribute to the hardworking people who make America possible.”The ceremony was held on the same day that Palmerton hosted the county Veteran’s Day parade.
