Lehighton pins Bombers

Dylan Shock's pin set the tone for the Lehighton wrestling team in Thursday's dual against Palmerton.

Schock secured the first of six falls for the Indians, who rolled to a 57-21 non-league win over the Bombers."I was expecting it to be a really close match coming in," said Lehighton head coach Floyd Brown. "I know they're well-coached, and we have a lot of young guys. I thought our young guys wrestled well, not getting pinned, and we got some pins where I didn't expect pins and that helped us out a lot."I thought it was going to come down to getting bonus points. We did a good job, (even) where we lost - we had a couple of guys get pinned, but our guys fought. Those experienced guys, who have been in our lineup and are starting to see a lot more success going out and getting pins that really carried us."Some of those victories came from familiar faces. Dylan Schock (170), who was one of only two seniors in the starting lineup, along with juniors Nate Kemmerer (126) and Tyler Schock (138), as well as sophomore Chris Whiteman (145), return with varsity experience. But Brown also got pins from Brett Gasker (220) and Lucas Sangiuliano (113), two of the four freshmen in the Indians' starting lineup."Coming here, it's a rivalry and it's an away match, and I was a little worried about them being tentative, or what their effort might be like," the coach said. "We have a lot of guys who are wrestling in their first varsity match."I was very pleased with the way we came out."Specifically?"We were aggressive and we went after it. We weren't backing up," Brown noted. "I really liked what we did on bottom. We've been really trying to work on bottom, staying off of our bellies and exploding out. I thought we really did a good job with that."Grant Wetzel scored in the third period to claim a 3-2 decision at 152 pounds for Lehighton's only victory that didn't come via fall or forfeit.Palmerton gave up 18 points on three forfeits in addition to the 36 points surrendered in the Indians' six pins."Unfortunately for us, having 11 spots, we're going to have three forfeits, so we're down 18 points," said Palmerton head coach Justin Petersen. "I tell the guys we have to get bonus where we can get them and we have to save bonus points where we can. And we didn't do that tonight."The Bombers scored several bonus points of their own, however, as Kyle Kralik (182), Jared Mooney (195) and Matt Lalik (132) came away with pins while John Iles scored a decision (285)."We had a couple of guys that came out and did what I expected of them," said Petersen. "Overall, though, we've got to get tougher at all positions. We just have to get mentally tougher and come back stronger."I just told the guys that there are two different ways they could go: they can either go in a shell … or they can come back tomorrow, get to work and get better. So that's what we're hoping to do."REDEMPTION… Dylan Schock's win over Riad Kapur was a role reversal of a year ago, when he was pinned by Kapur in the last bout of the match, a result that gave Palmerton a 40-36 win. "He came back and turned the tables, which is good for him," said Brown. "It was nice for him to come out and get the ball rolling for us with a pin. He's worked hard in the offseason, so he's doing a good job."MOVING UP… Iles' win at 285 pounds was no small feat. "I thought he did really well," said Petersen. "He weighs 195 pounds and … he stepped up for the team and went up to heavyweight, and did exactly what we told him to do. He followed the game plan and he outworks everybody. He's a very hard worker."Lehighton 57, Palmerton 21170 - Dylan Schock (L) pinned Riad Kapur in 4:23182 - Kyle Kralik (P) pinned Alex Ziegenfuss in 1:06195 - Jared Mooney (P) pinned Jack Zimmerman in 1:25220 - Brett Gasker (L) pinned Don Nicolo in 0:49285 - John Iles (P) dec.
