Girl, 8, dedicates birthday to help Weatherly school

Like a lot of other third graders, Adia Russell would be happy to get Pokémon cards and action figures for her birthday.

But the Weatherly girl decided that this year, she would like to do something to help her hometown. She decided she wanted to help the Schwab School Restoration Project. The group is trying to save the landmark school, which serves as the symbol of the town, by acquiring it and donating it to the borough. So Russell decided that she would invite “The whole town” — and the general public to celebrate her ninth birthday and help the school. The event will take place Monday at 6 p.m. at the Lehigh and Lausanne Fire Co., located on South Lehigh Gorge Drive near Weatherly.“My birthday is coming up Dec. 19,” she said. “And I decided to make a fundraiser out of it. A fundraiser for the school.”Her mother, Alyssa Hinkle, serves on the Restoration Project Board. She helped arrange for vendors, a basket raffle, and a bake sale that will take place during the event. But she said the idea was all Adia’s.“I was so proud and excited at the same time because I knew a fundraiser would be a much bigger undertaking,” she said.Adia’s family has a long history in Weatherly. She said that she was inspired by older Weatherly residents, after hearing them share their stories about the school. But she also likes the school itself.“I think that it’s pretty cool. It has lots of memories for lots of people,” she said of the school. She was particularly inspired by the memory of her Grandmam, Joyce Hinkle, who passed away in 2014. She went to the old Schwab school.“She died when I was about 6 or 7,” Adia said. “She was a nice lady.”Adia isn’t asking for presents.Hinkle said that it’s her daughter’s nature to think of others.“She is special because she has such a caring heart and always wants to help. I’m a very lucky mom,” she said.
