Bring back the 1950s diner

Dear Editor,

To some this may sound weird, but here goes anyway! My wife and I drive by what used to be the White Diner on Route 309, south of Tamaqua, many times. Each time I remark, "What a shame about the demise of a great diner." I would like to take you back a few years (1953 to be exact) when I met a man in the diner who needed a truck driver.I was having coffee with a friend of mine who took me along on his truck to New York City several times. This stranger asked me if I ever drove truck, to which I replied, "Sure!" (I didn't tell him it was only a pickup). He said, "Well my driver quit and if you take that tractor-trailer load of coal to New York City I will pay you $15." That started my career as a tractor-trailer driver. (What a thrill that was driving down Hazard Road from Lehighton to Palmerton and on to the big city, with no experience at all!)The point of this letter is that I wish someone would bulldoze that extinct nightclub (or whatever it is) on that spot and put a real 1950s style diner like the one between Schuylkill Haven and Cressona. There is a heavy volume of truck traffic still on Route 309 and I am sure if you would serve some Pennsylvania Dutch food you could make it go. But what about Leiby's some ask? No, diner food and truck parking go hand-in-hand, and I am sure it would work. Any takers? As always,Richard M. GrossLehighton
