Mooney, Marian power into PIAA Class 1A final title game

MECHANICSBURG - Berlin Brothersvalley head coach Corey Will tried to duplicate them in practice.

The Mountaineer players tried to return them in the match.Neither was successful.Like she has so many times before, Jasmine Mooney left another opponent puzzled with a dazzling performance in a Marian victory. But this win was a little bit sweeter than the others. With a 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 25-17 triumph over Berlin Brothersvalley, Marian punched its ticket to the PIAA Class 1A championship match for the third time in the last four years."It feels amazing," said Mooney. "We're all crying in excitement because we're so happy."The junior's play in Tuesday's semifinal left no doubt the Fillies would be moving on."I think we're performing to our expectation," she said.Mooney did a little bit of everything for the Fillies, finishing with 29 kills, 18 digs, 10 aces and one block. But it was her performance from the service line that stood out above everything else."I think her (Mooney) serve was absolutely the key to this match," Will said afterward. "I give her all the credit to be able to have that kind of consistency with that kind of serve."I was trying yesterday in my gym to replicate that serve as best as I could, and I told my girls after the second game that I knew I didn't even come close. And I couldn't get it with that consistency."Marian was tested during the four set affair at Cumberland Valley High School. After going up 1-0 at the start of the match, the District 11 champions didn't lead again in the opening set until grabbing a 19-18 advantage. The score was tied at 23-23 before a Mooney kill and a Mountaineer error closed it out.Berlin Brothersvalley, champions of District 5, found its rhythm in the second set, trailing only once at 10-9 before ripping off seven straight points to grab a 16-10 lead before claiming the set 25-18.That would be the last time the Fillies would trail in the match.Though the Mountaineers tied it twice in the third set - at 15-15 and 16-16 - they were never able to pull ahead the rest of the way."Our game plan is tough defense, tough defense, tough defense," said Marian head coach John Fallabel. "Our game plan is outside; we're traditional - high, outside."Perhaps Mooney's biggest point was a kill that made it 17-11 in the fourth set, a strike that shifted momentum firmly toward the Fillies."When she put that one down, it went straight down and that was the end of the game, right there," said Fallabel. "As soon she put that down, you could see their (Berlin Brothersvalley) body language (change)."With the way she hits the ball, I don't know where she gets these shots from. She has peripheral vision … and she's just out there having a good time. She just does it all."Mooney wasn't Marian's only outside hitter with a big game, as senior captain Miranda Antiga recorded 10 kills and four digs."This means the absolute world to me," Antiga said of moving on. "I'm never going to go home disappointed knowing that I didn't give my all to this team."When it's over, that's the farthest that any team can go."In addition to Mooney and Antiga, junior Gianna Agosti dished out 42 assists and had two aces.STEPPING IN - AND STEPPING UP … Junior Isabella Blasko got the start Tuesday for Elena Beckett, who was out with an illness, and recorded three blocks, two kills and one dig. The effort was one Fallabel couldn't have been more proud of. "She's a Marian player," the coach said of Blasko. "She's someone who's in the background. This is her first start, in the state semifinal, and she did her job."Added Blasko, "It's crazy, but once you're on the court, you just kind of block everything out and you're so focused. It's just fun."GENERATION NEXT … Berlin Brothersvalley freshman Kiera Booth finished with 17 kills and four aces. Booth led the team with 257 kills this season and drew high praise from Fallabel. "She's going to be a fantastic player," he said "Four years from now, she's going to rule the state."Senior Claire Spochart had 17 digs and six kills for the Mountaineers while Geordan Hay tallied 19 assists and Lexie Dorcon finished with 14 digs.REMATCH … Marian will face Greensburg Central Catholic in the finals.
