Tamaqua girls qualify for districts
The Tamaqua girls soccer team celebrated a milestone in the program's history and also qualified for the District 11 playoffs with a victory over Northern Lehigh on Monday.
GIRLS SOCCERNo. Lehigh-TamaquaTamaqua posted a 5-2 non-league win over Northern Lehigh.The victory was a historic one and important one for the Raiders, who not only recorded the 200th win in the 18-year history of the program, but also qualified for the District 11 playoffs.Kayla Sherry had three goals to lead Tamaqua (8-6-2). Alyssa Campomizzi and Emma Kuczynski had one goal each for the Raiders with Campomizzi also picking up three assists.Jill Olewine and Katie Yesik had goals for Northern Lehigh (4-13).Flo Rios had five saves in goal for Tamaqua while Meghan Handwerk recorded 18 saves for the Bulldogs.Wilson-LehightonKatie Aaron scored with 8:53 remaining in overtime to give Lehighton a 4-3 nonleague victory over Wilson.Rajah Quinones assisted on the winning score as the Indians improved their record to 5-10-2 on the season.Morgan Yurasits had a pair of goals for Lehighton, including the game-tying score with 18:07 left in regulation. Quinones also had a goal.Gaby Vega had two goals and an assist for Wilson (2-14).Lehighton had a 32-20 advantage in shots. Indian goalie Julia Frey made 10 saves.Parkland-NorthwesternIn a battle of District 11 powerhouses, Parkland rolled to a 5-0 nonleague victory over Northwestern.The Trojans (16-0) broke open a tight game with four second-half goals. Gabby Wilby scored two goals for Parkland while Rachel Laird, Rachel Medlar and Devyn Anderson all scored once.Parkland had a 19-1 advantage in shots.The loss drops Northwestern to 14-2-1 on the season.BOYS SOCCERLehighton-PalmertonLehighton and Palmerton battled to a 1-1 tie in a nonleague game.The Indians led 1-0 at halftime as Patrick Lawler scored off a feed from Isiah Everett.But Palmerton earned the tie on a Rio Kapur goal.Ryan Yacone had 14 saves in goal for the Bombers. Zach Andrews and Logan Motz split the goalie duties for Lehighton with Andrews making 11 saves and Motz three.Jim Thorpe-No. SchuylkillJim Thorpe used a suffocating defense to blank North Schuylkill 2-0 in Schuylkill League action.The Olympians didn't allow a shot in the game as they improved their record to 11-6 overall and 6-4 in the league.Meanwhile, the Jim Thorpe offense managed 21 shots with two of them finding the back of the net. Jake Burkhart scored a first half goal off a Chris Williams assist and Jorge Macareno scored in the second half as Shane Meckes picked up the assist.Nativity-WeatherlyWeatherly's Michael Kennelly did a little bit of everything to lead his team to a 2-1 Schuylkill League victory over Nativity.Not only was Kennelly the winning goalie, stopping 13 of the 14 Nativity shots, but he also scored a goal for the Wreckers on a free kick.Paul Eckert accounted for the other Wrecker goal,The victory improves Weatherly's record to 8-6-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the league.Tamaqua-Pine GroveDavid Snedden's hat trick lifted Pine Grove to a 7-0 Schuylkill League victory over Tamaqua.Michael Elo added a pair of goals for the Cardinals.Tamaqua falls to 4-13 overall and 2-9 in league play.VOLLEYBALLWilliams Valley-Jim ThorpeJim Thorpe swept Williams Valley 25-7, 25-16, 25-12 in a nonleague match.The victory lifts the Olympians' record to 9-7. They need just one win in their final four matches to clinch a District 11 berth.Kelsey Carroll had a strong floor game for Jim Thorpe with 12 assists and seven digs. Also contributing to the victory were Mackenzie Rosenberger (six kills), Jillian Peterson (five kills) and Alex McGinley (five aces).Jim Thorpe also won the JV match, 2-0.Tamaqua-Sch. HavenTamaqua rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Schuylkill Haven, 24-26, 23-25, 25-12, 25-17, 15-12, in a nonleague match.Carly Kosciolek had a huge night for the Raiders at the net with 16 kills. She also chipped in six digs and two aces. Diedra Ressler added seven aces, four kills and three digs while Andre Iacoviello had a strong defensive performance with 18 digs.Tamaqua won the JV match, 2-1.Weatherly-MMIFreeland MMI swept Weatherly in a nonleague match, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21.Jen Carter had nine service points, including a pair of aces, and also added two kills to lead the Wreckers. Emily Zoscin added six service points, two aces and two assists while Alexis Wilkinson picked up three service points.Weatherly also lost the JV match, 25-4, 18-25, 25-17.Notre Dame-NorthwesternNotre Dame recorded a 25-23, 25-22, 25-8 Colonial League sweep of Northwestern.Katie Smith had 13 service points to lead the way for Northwestern. Sarah Sekerak and Stacy Everett added eight service points apiece.GIRLS BASKETBALLJUNIOR HIGH8TH GRADEWeatherly-Panther ValleyWeatherly defeated Panther Valley, 21-15.Grace Miller led Weatherly with eight points. Shayla Heitczman scored four.Erica Dubosky scored all 15 points for the Panthers.
