Former students and friends of the late Thelma Urban will continue to honor her memory with the Second Annual Supurban 5K Run and Fun Walk. The event will be held Saturdayat the Tamaqua Area High School Stadium, sponsored by the Tamaqua Class of 2017.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the run/walk will start at 9 a.m.Mrs. Urban was a popular language arts teacher at Tamaqua High School who died unexpectedly in June 2015 at the age of 40 due to a sudden heart attack. Her passing stunned the school community. She left behind her husband, Mike, and two children, Sean and Violet, as well as her extended family. To her students and colleagues, Mrs. Urban was a superhero, which is how they chose a name for her memorial run. Determined to remember her passion for life and steadfast support of the students, they created the Thelma Urban Memorial Fund, establishing scholarships for the Urban children as well as for a graduating senior furthering their education in a language arts related field. The fun walk will be 1 mile around the track at the sports stadium, while the 5K run will leave the stadium and weave through the streets of Tamaqua, ending back at the track. Participants are encouraged to wear superhero costumes, and prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. There will also be a Chinese auction, lots of snacks and a bounce house.Memorial donations may also be made to the Thelma Urban Scholarship Fund, c/o Roseann Weinrich, 500 Penn St., Tamaqua, PA 18252.
