Notre Dame blanks Palmerton
BETHLEHEM - Notre Dame coach Phil Stambaugh was happy with a win following his Crusaders' 20-0 shutout of Palmerton Friday night.
The conditions weren't ideal, but the first-year coach is taking it and moving on."I feel good about this game because it's a win," he said. "I just told the guys that the score at halftime doesn't concern me, because the final score is what I care about. Good teams find a way to win."Despite the slippery situations on the field, along with Palmerton's improving defense, the undefeated Crusaders gutted out a victory that was only 3-0 at the intermission."We knew how good Stasko and Perschy were and I can't say it enough about the teams in this league," Stambaugh said. "Every team has something that they can hurt you with and Palmerton brought it tonight."Throughout the game's first two quarters of play, the only points came off a 35-yard field goal by junior kicker Tucker Eighmy."Our defense played well and I'm proud of their efforts to hold (Notre Dame) to 20 points," Palmerton coach Chris Walkowiak said. "I believe that's their lowest point total up to this point."The talented Crusaders have produced plenty of points thus far this season with their previous low-game total being 31 a week ago at Salisbury."The difference tonight was that they were able to run the ball and we were not," Walkowiak continued. "You need to be able to run the ball at any level to give yourself a chance of winning, and along with not taking advantage of opportunities, I think that was what led to the loss."In the second half, the hosts went to work as on their third possession of the third quarter they maneuvered down to first-and-goal on the Palmerton seven. Sophomore Cole Defranco eventually found room to get in for the contest's first touchdown, making it 10-0 with 2:13 remaining on the clock.A Bomber turnover on downs yielded another chance for Notre Dame and senior Mitch Daniel broke free and sped to the end zone for a 62-yard score, ballooning their lead to 17-0 early in the fourth. The Crusaders (6-0), then tacked on another field goal on their ensuing drive to produce the final score."I thought we did a great job on defense," Walkowiak said. "We pinned them a few times and kept them under wraps throughout, but when we had breakdowns, I thought it showed and that's been an Achilles heel with having those breakdowns at inopportune times."With Palisades coming to town next week, the Bombers (2-4) are hoping to get back on the right track with some adjustments."We want to improve our execution and our run blocking," Walkowiak said. "We have to be more physical and take advantage of opportunities and we have to do that in order to win."PROTECT THE QB ...Talented senior signal-caller Garrett Perschy looked to be hobbled midway through the second quarter as he limped slightly to the sideline. Bomber fans should note he never sat out and continued to play and he will be evaluated in the near future. Post-game reports claim he should be alright for next week's battle with Palisades.MUDDY LAUNDRY ...The penalty flags were out in abundance as Notre Dame hurt itself repeatedly with 11 penalties for 95 yards while Palmerton had six infractions for 50 yards.BRING IT BACK ...On two occasions, the Bombers had big plays brought back due to broken rules as Mike Stasko hauled in a Perschy pass in the second quarter for what would have been a 43-yard score. However, a holding penalty negated it. Also, a punt return that would have put the Bombers in the red zone was retrieved due to blocking in the back.
