Lehighton man leads state police on chase

A Lehighton man who fled from state police as officers tried to conduct a traffic stop is facing multiple drug-related charges.

Ryan Mooney, 37, was committed to the Carbon County Prison, Nesquehoning, following his apprehension by troopers after he attempted to flee and elude police at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.He is charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.State police at the Lehighton barracks said they attempted to stop Mooney while he was driving a Honda motorcycle in the area of Fireline Road, near White Street, in Bowmanstown, after observing the cycle making a traffic violation. Police said he had a rear seat passenger at the time.Police said Mooney fled the scene with police in pursuit, committing multiple traffic violations at the time.Police were eventually able to stop, apprehend and take Mooney into custody without incident. He was taken for a blood test and then incarcerated.Mooney remains in Carbon County Prison on $50,000 bail, set by District Judge Joseph D. Homanko in Weatherly on Wednesday morning.A preliminary hearing before District Judge William J. Kissner has been set for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5.
