Weatherly rally comes up short
SHENANDOAH - Weatherly's volleyball team eventually shifted its game into high gear on Thursday night against a much-improved Shenandoah Valley squad.
But it turned out to be a case of too little, too late, as the Wreckers dropped the Schuylkill League battle, 25-18, 25-21, 11-25, 26-24."We're fighting, we don't back down, we battle," said Weatherly coach Kristy Fiorem about her team's improved play in the third and fourth sets. "No one is going to give us a break, we've got to fight for every point … chip, chip, chip away."But the Wreckers fight wasn't only evident in the final two sets, it was also on display in the first set. Trailing, 20-10, the Wreckers went on an 8-4 run to start to make things interesting before the Devils were finally able to put it away. Joie Monahan, Arianna Mentuksy and Allison Wargo combined for multiple aces and kills to lead Shenandoah in the opening set.Weatherly once again battled back from a deficit in the second set. Trailing 18-10, it reeled off six straight points to tighten things considerably. Shenandoah regrouped and went on a run of its own to extend the lead to 23-16. Weatherly made things interesting with a five-point run, but the Devils settled down getting a Monahan kill and a return error off an Emily Demalis serve to close it out."We're kind of learning, getting the feel for each other," said first-year Shenandoah coach Chris Conroy, who wasn't appointed until midway through August. "Weatherly showed a lot of heart late in the second set, and we just seemed to be lost in the third set."In the third set, the Wreckers jumped out to a 14-4 lead and never looked back, as Samantha Andreuzzi, Emily Zoscin, Nikkie Polivka and Katie Graham fueled the rally. After facing an early 5-0 deficit in the fourth set, the Wreckers battled back and eventually tied things up at 18-18 on a Kim Carter kill. Shenandoah had a match point a little later in the set, but an Andreuzzi kill tied the score at 24-24 and kept the Wreckers' hopes alive. The joy was short-lived, however, as two sterling points from Olivia Gallo sealed the Shenandoah victory.BY THE NUMBERS ... Weatherly got nine service points from Andreuzzi and Carter, and seven from Polivka. Carter had five kills. Demalis had 25 assists for Shenandoah, while Madisyn Kowalick registered 17 digs. Wargo, Monahan and Gallo each had seven kills.ADDING IT UP ... Weatherly gave up 46 points on errors, while Shenandoah Valley's miscues allowed for 54 points.
