Palmerton Concourse Club shows adult, student artwork

The Concourse Club of Palmerton had its annual Art and Photography Exhibit on Saturday and Sunday. The Concourse Club is in its 101st year of being in service for the Palmerton community.

The art exhibit is in conjunction with the Palmerton Community Festival. The categories for art are adult, junior and senior high school, pre-kindergarten through sixth grade and a special Palmerton category. Prizes for the adult and high school categories include cash prizes and honorable mentions. Children in the pre-kindergarten through sixth grade category can walk away with art supplies and a certificate."We are always surprised of the quality art that's exhibited," said Diane Huber, co-chair of the Concourse Club. "Students certainly enjoy having their works displayed."The exhibit also has a bargain corner for artists to sell their pieces under $150. The official exhibit only accepts new art each year so the bargain corner is a great place for artists to display their previous pieces. There were also raffle prizes available such as quilts and hand-painted items. By simply signing into the exhibit guest book, customers are also entered into a drawing to receive a drawing of the Palmerton Football Stadium. The special Palmerton exhibit was started last year to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Concourse Club of Palmerton. It was a community favorite and was brought back again this year. There were approximately 160 works displayed at the exhibit in the adult, high school and Palmerton categories. Over 100 pieces were displayed by the pre-kindergarten through sixth grade category.

This oil painting, entitled "Engine 425," by Mary Anne Shafer won second place. The painting is of the famous steam engine that visits Jim Thorpe.
