Palmerton fest opens tonight with music, more
The Palmerton Community Festival opens tonight with lots of great music, crafts, rides and food. The event continues Saturday and Sunday.
Georgette Jones, country music star and daughter of George Jones and Tammy Wynette, will perform at the festival from 9-10:30 p.m. on the main stage.Tamala Georgette Jones was born to the only Hall of Fame husband and wife country artists. She’s been singing with one or both parents since she was 3. She recorded her first single with her father, “Daddy Come Home,” when she was 10 years old and performed it on an HBO special.The Pennsylvania Villagers are a fan-favorite. They will be performing from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the bandstand.The band got started when Walter Spack encouraged his children to play music. Although Spack never played an instrument himself, he did all he could to help his children learn instruments. He eventually started the band the Pennsylvania Villagers.“He was really the driving force of the band,” said Carol Hunadi, Spack’s daughter and one of the original members of the band.The Villagers focus their music on polka, but also include country, oldies and big band in their set. They play original songs like “Polka Joe” written by Hunadi. The song was written for Polka Joe Manjack who has been playing polka on the radio since 1974. Another original song written by Spack, “Polka Carousel,” is often performed by the Pennsylvania Villagers.The band is a crowd favorite, playing songs like “Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie” and “Beer Barrel.”“It is an honor to be back at the Palmerton Festival,” says Hunadi. “We hope our fans will come out and see us.”Dance with Kim is another favorite.The group has performed at the Lehighton sesquicentennial, nursing homes and on the cancer telethon. “We are celebrating 30 years, so it is nice to be out in the community,” said Kim Semmel, owner and artistic director at Dance with Kim.Semmel is an award-winning choreographer. She has won Best of Show and Best Choreography at the Las Vegas Dance Festival. Students of Semmel have gone on to earn dance scholarships to local colleges and universities. Dance with Kim has also performed at Hershey Park, Disney World, the Citrus Bowl and Six Flags Great Adventure.Previous students of Semmel have gone on to dance for the 76ers basketball team, the Philadelphia Eagles Dance Team and for the Philadelphia Soul Arena Football.Dance with Kim will feature eight dancers who will perform a range of dances including: hip-hop, musical theater, contemporary and jazz.Dance with Kim has not been at the festival for several years and is excited to return.“We are happy to be invited to the festival,” Semmel said. “We are looking forward to the event.”The dancers will perform between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the main stage.The Palmerton Festival Committee notes that there is an error in the brochure.The Palmerton Community band is playing Saturday. The Perseverance Jazz band was omitted from the original brochure, but will be playing tonight from 8 to 9 in the bandstand.
