Contracts to benefit Schuylkill seniors

Senior citizens in Schuylkill County will benefit from two contracts approved Wednesday by county commissioners.

On the recommendation of Georgene Fedoriska, director of the Office of Senior Services, commissioners approved a change in the office's two-year contract for legal services with Burke & Burke, Shenandoah.The change increases the cap by $1,000, for a total of $28,000. The rate is $90 an hour.The other contract change is to a three-year, $1,027,079 pact with Diakon Child Family and Community Ministries, Allentown.The change, requested by Diakon, adjusts line item budget amounts for fiscal year 2016-2017 for senior community centers, Meals on Wheels, Volunteers Serving Seniors, Prime Time Health, Apprise, Apprise Regional, and Apprise Telecenter.The total budget cost of each service category and contract cap won't change.Also on Wednesday, commissioners approved two people as new members of the Board of Assessment Appeals, effective through Dec. 31.They are Francis A. Spokas, Tamaqua, and John J. Houseknecht, St. Clair.
