Saylorsburg man charged in fatal 2015 wreck

Police have filed charges against a Saylorsburg man accused of causing a March 2015 crash that killed another driver.

Robert D. Givey Jr., 41, of Vista Drive, was arraigned on charges on Tuesday.

Police say that on March 20, 2015, Givey caused a chain-reaction crash involving a PennDOT plow truck that led to the death of 27-year-old Richard Kline III of Saylorsburg.

A drug test revealed that Givey had morphine in his system following the crash, police said.

He was also driving an unregistered vehicle, though police said they did not believe any mechanical defects with the vehicle contributed to the crash.

According to a criminal complaint, the crash occurred when Givey was westbound on Allegheny Drive. His vehicle slid through the stop sign at the road's intersection with Route 115, entering the path of a PennDOT plow truck that was northbound on Route 115, according to police.

The plow truck driver swerved left, striking Kline's vehicle with the plow.

Kline was pronounced dead on the scene due to multiple traumatic injuries. The plow driver was not injured.

Police conducted blood tests on both surviving drivers. The plow truck driver's test came up negative for drugs and alcohol. A post-mortem toxicology test on Kline revealed no signs of drugs or alcohol.

Givey had previous violations for speeding and driving under the influence.

In March of this year, before police filing charges in the crash, Givey was charged with DUI after a traffic stop on Interstate 78 in Lehigh County.

In a news release at that time, police said that Givey's girlfriend was overdosing in the vehicle at the time of the crash. He admitted to using heroin and drugs which were not prescribed to him.

Police filed charges in the 2015 crash on August 3. Givey faces charges of homicide by vehicle while DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, and homicide by vehicle, all felonies, as well as related charges.

He was arraigned Wednesday and released after posting $25,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 1.
